In my opinion Rumer Godden was very under valued as an author. One of my junior school teachers recommended her books to me. I adored her Miss Happiness and Miss Flower which was a story about two Japanese dolls and was very pleased to discover her ballet books Listen to the Nightingale and Thursdays Children. As an adult I devoured In This House of Brede, The Greengage Summer and the Black Narcissus. Her writing is sublime and I love the way she plays with time, you move seamlessly from one era to another. Her life story seems to be just as exciting as her books, growing up in India, teaching dance and then leaving India because someone tried to poison her. Anne Chisholm had opportunity to do several interviews and access to Rumer Godden’s letters when writing this book and has produced a biography celebrating her writing and her strength as a woman.
