I always think of racing drivers of the early years as being from the world of the rich and famous but I do not expect them to be spies. W Williams, winner of the first Monaco Grand Prix in 1929 joined the army in 1940. He was recruited into the SOE. His task was to create a sabotage network in German occupied France. He used his racing connections to get help and he and one of France’s leading racing drivers Robert Benoist, collaborated and created an amazing resistance network.
