Jonathan Martin was the man who set fire to the York Minster. It was not his only claim to fame as he had also been arrested for threatening to shoot the Bishop of Oxford. Life had treated Jonathan Martin badly, he had seen his sister murdered as a child, had been press-ganged into the Navy when a young man and finished his days in Bedlam. He had wanted to reform the Church of England on a sort of Methodist model. I have visited York minster on a couple occasions and read about the fire but had not really given much thought as to who the arsonist was and why he had done it.
