I had only come across Frances Hodgson Burnett’s children’s novels so it was a delight to discover this book. This edition is published by Persephone who specialise in publishing books that are out of print and whose authors have sadly slipped into obscurity. There are echoes of the themes of some of her children’s books as the main character is well bred and doesn’t have family or I should say have any family who wish to be bothered with her. It is however darker than the children’s books and her marriage causes some very murky ripples in step family’s behaviour. I adored this book and really empathised with this lady and found myself cheering her on from the sidelines.
